Boris Uspenski

Posted: 12th March 2014

It is with huge regret that we are informing our skating family that a loving husband, father and figure skating coach Boris Uspenski sadly passed away on the 4th March 2014.

This has left a huge hole in many lives and in the skating community. Boris will be missed but his spirit will continue to live on through his family and skaters. His infectious personality touched the lives of many and he will be remembered with great fondness forever.

Born in 1958 in Kharkov, Ukraine, Boris started skating at the age of 7. He was coached by Vladimir Kaprov and competed at many different levels of competition, twice becoming the national champion of Ukraine, and a member of the Senior National Squad of the USSR. He started coaching at the age of 16 whilst still competing himself. Boris holds the title International Master of Sport (figure skating).

Boris met Inna Cherkasova when they both trained at the same school as young single skaters. Married in 1982, Boris and Inna turned to professional skating in 1984, joining the Ukrainian Ballet on Ice and performing main roles as the soloists in the ballet team during world tours.

In 1990 they moved to Slovenia and started a new ice skating club in Ljubljana, where they worked for 3 years. During this time Boris helped to train Mojca Kopac and Luka Klasinc for the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France, and Jan Cejvan and Mojca Kopac for European and World Championships. They then moved to Celje, Slovenia for 14 years where Boris raised many skaters to National, International and World Championship level.

From 2008 to 2014, Boris coached at the International School of Skating, Milton Keynes, UK, as a NISA qualified level 4 coach.

Please take the time to have a look at this video that has been put together to remember his achievements and what a wonderful like he had. He may of lost his battle with Cancer on 4 March 2014, but he will forever be in our hearts.
