Duo pick up wins in Finland

Posted: 17th October 2011

ISS Birmingham skaters came up with two first places at the prestigious Tikkurilla Trophy 2011 international in Helsinki, Finland.

As well as the host nation, there were skaters from Russia, Romania, Finland, Estonia, Italy and Sweden taking part as well as the UK skaters.

And eight-year-old Genevieve Somerville, from Mickleover, and Sutton-in-Ashfield skater Luke Sidebottom (9) led the way.

Somerville came first out of 31 skaters which was a fine result as her competition was so strong.

In his first international competition, Sidebottom came up with a personal best to beat off four skaters from Russia to win by a massive ten points over the boy in second place.

Abby Green, ten, also from Long Eaton was fifth in the Spring A section out of 28 skaters with a personal best score.

Thirteen-year-old Molly Valencia, of West Bridgford was tenth in the Novice ladies and 20th in junior ladies with a personal best.

She now looks forward to the British Championships in November at Ice Sheffield.

It's been a busy time for Nina Povey, 17, of Mapperley.

She was 16th in Junior ladies in Finland with a pb score and she was also third at the Welsh Championships in the junior ladies short section and fifth in the long section, which had 41 skaters trying to qualify for the 2011 British Championships.

All the skaters are trained by ex-British and Olympic squad member Debbie Keeley at ISS Birmingham.
