Figure skater Dempsey Andrews hopes to carry Olympic flame!

Posted: 10th August 2011

Northern Ireland's Dempsey Andrews, who skates at ISS Coventry and Dundonald, has been nominated to participate in the Olympic 2012 Torch Relay.

Dempsey Andrews from Dundonald is one of the country's Coca-Cola Future Flame nominees and young sports star in with a chance of running 300m with the iconic torch as part of the relay.

Since persuading her father to take her along to the local skating rink when she was just five years old, Dempsey has been hooked on hitting the ice.

Dempsey makes frequent journeys to Coventry to train with Olympic, World and European coach Yuri Bureiko and his specialist coaching team at the International Ice Skating School.

Winning her first gold medal at just seven years old, Dempsey has won a staggering 23 UK Podium positions in open and club competitions across the UK and now Dempsey has a new achievement to add to her dozens of gold, silver and bronze ice skating medals.

The 15 year-old has earned huge levels of support following the news of her Olympic torch nomination, including praise from First Minister for Northern Ireland, Peter Robinson.

"Dempsey is a real ambassador for our country," he said in a letter addressed to the young skater.

Dempsey has also skated alongside Torvill and Dean, and more recently was selected to teach Northern Irish TV presenter Zoe Salmon how to skate on Blue Peter, ahead of her appearances on Dancing on Ice.

Skating with the celebrities and her impressive trophy cabinet have understandably won Dempsey some significant acclaim.

"When I got the call a couple of weeks ago to say I'd been nominated to carry the Olympic torch I just remember laughing; it seemed unreal! The first person I told was my mum and she was delighted. Neither of us could believe it. I was just in shock. I didn't hesitate to agree to the nomination, I said 'absolutely yes'."

ISS wish's Dempsey lots of luck!

Nominations can be made at www.cokezone.ie until September 2011.
