ISS COVENTRY RISING STAR WINS KYRGZ NATIONAL TITLE AT FIRST ATTEMPT

Congratulations to ISS Coventry skater Malika Sharshenbaeva, who last week fought off the challenge from seven of her skating peers to take the title of national Junior Ladies Champion of Kyrgyzstan. Malika, who is still only 15 years old, has duel citizenship - being both a British and Kyrgyz citizen - which enabled her to compete at this event.

This was the first time that Malika had competed in Kyrgyzstan. There the skating federation is still in its infancy so Malika, and her coach Yuri Bureiko, were excited to travel abroad to support this growing event. On returning home Yuri was full of praise for the organisers of the event saying that 'they did a great job!’

Despite having to cope with being in an environment that was new to her, competing on a slightly smaller sized rink and temperatures that were hot outside yet freezing inside the rink, Malika rose to the occasion to produce two clean programs, both of which included her trademark solid double axel. Of her performances Malika said ‘I just prepared myself mentally and enjoyed every second of it!’ She went on to explain ‘I wasn't feeling well in the free program (skated to Summertime), I had a cold and a terrible migraine but I put myself together and managed to get the free out clean!’

Next for Malika will be the Coventry IJS at the end of this month, and then new programs before heading to the Junior Grand Prix event in Bratislava, Slovakia towards the end of August where she will be representing Kyrgyzstan. Before that, however, Malika will also be attending the Coventry ISS camp in Austria which is being held during the second week of August.

Looking back at her win Malika said ‘I feel amazing, this is something special that I've never had before. I honestly felt like a celebrity with all the newspaper and TV interviews. The whole experience was eye opening and amazing!’ She continued ‘it helped me a lot with my confidence on the ice. I'm more confident and know what I want.’

And a final word from coach Yuri…..‘it was an absolutely incredible experience!
