Phillip Harris - International success

Posted: 3rd March 2013

The Challenge Cup 2013 is over with Brian Joubert and Carolina Kostner taking first place for the men’s and ladies respectively, however British skaters held their own and came home feeling really happy with their performances.

Competitor Phil Harris from ISS Coventry has been working with Yuri Bureiko for last few years and with recent personal success and his best skate this season at The Challenge Cup, his season is going very well.

Phil, who is currently the best scorer in this country for senior men, has just competed at The Challenge cup at The Hague in the Netherlands. After the short program he was in 4th place overall. Phil and Yuri had set their own technical targets at the beginning of last year in preparation for this season and have managed to achieve them for the competition, the target after that was to achieve European and World qualifying scores.

Into the long program and sitting in 4th place and with the best short program giving him the score to qualify for the Worlds, Phil skated in the final group directly after Brian Joubert. Phil said “it was awesome to be able to skate in the same group as Brian however the noise from the crowd was the biggest challenge for me”

During his long program Phil fell during his steps but recovered really well and didn’t let it affect the rest of his skate. Yuri went on to say “I wasn’t sure how he would cope having a fall during his steps, but really happy with his recovery and he did a great job”

Phil went on to finish 8th Overall with a score of 176.34.

Since Phil started training at the International School of Skating, Yuri has been working with him to focus and set individual goals along the way. Phil is a focused and a disciplined athlete, and has the drive that will help him achieve his ambitions.

Phil was just under 2 points short in qualifying in the free program for the Worlds Championships this year but came out with a personal best, Phil wasn’t disappointed with his skate and is happy with his progression and performance during this season. Phil also got a PB in Italy, a disappointing 4th at the British Championships, however he achieved his own technical goals and successfully landed his triple axle in competition consistently, Phil went on to say “this is evidence that I am is going in the right direction, I know I have so much more to achieve, and my scores show just how much I am ahead”

Phil’s aim is to get consistent, train hard and is currently working on a quad.

ISS Would like to congratulate Phil on his recent success – Well Done!
